- Abdullah Ibrahim Septet, Saturday, Nov. 6: 7pm & 9pm. Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) has long been South Africa's most celebrated jazz pianist. A deeply religious and masterful spokesman, Ibrahim's jazz draws from traditional African songs and spiritual music. At the Bride, Ibrahim tranforms his trio into Ekaye, a septet with a brass section, to play South African musical themes using Western jazz instrumentation.
For tickets call 215.925.9914.
- Gallery exhibition: Body Maps, Friday, Nov. 5 - Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005. Women from South Africa, who are HIV+, have created beautiful full-size renderings of how they imagine the disease is affecting their bodies. These thirteen remarkable women step out of the shadows to tell their personal stories, in words, paintings and photographs, with frankness and humor. Woven between these tales is the tireless struggle of the healthcare workers and campaigners, in particular Médecins Sans Frontières and the Treatment Action Campaign, whose battle against apathy of government and the pharmaceutical industry is as moving as the tales themselves.
Admission is free.
