Portrait of the Artist’s Father Reading
1913
Drypoint on Rives laid paper (trial proof)

Jacques Villon (born Gaston Duchamp)
French
Born 1875, died 1963

This veiled yet dynamic Cubist representation of Jacques Villon’s father is the last and most abstract of a series of large drypoint portraits the artist made in rapid succession in 1913. A trial proof, it is both rare and exceedingly rich; its painterly effect is the result of the artist experimenting with the inking of the plate.
