I would like to introduce myself. My
name is Phapada Mansatruksakul;
my nickname is "Jieb." I was born
on February 3, 1976, and now I'm
22 years old. I'm a fourth-year
student majoring in painting at the
Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai
University.
Can you tell us something about your background?
Before I came to Chiang Mai, I
lived and studied in Phichit where I
was born. My mother is a housewife
and my father is a dentist--he would
like me to fill his shoes. He was very
strict with me about my studies, but
I appreciate him. I was happy to study and to read every day. Until I was 16 years
old, I thought about my future career—what I should do? Nobody told me. I thought
by myself. I wanted to be an architect, so I went to take a supplementary in Bangkok
every weekend (from Phichit to Bangkok by train it takes about five hours). I met
people I was happy to talk with. I found out some things I didn't know before and it
made me very excited. Then my high school had a quota from Chiang Mai University
in the north of Thailand. I didn't know what kind of program I was interested in,
because it didn't have a college of architecture. So my parents persuaded me to enter
as "doctor, dentist, pharmacist." In the beginning I wanted that, too, because it had
been my parents' wish, but in the end I chose to enter into the fine arts department.
What kind of work do you make?
Working in mixed media and conceptual art makes me happy.
How do you feel about traveling across America?
Traveling is a wonderful idea for my life. The idea of new places and people is very
good. I'm very happy for every trip, especially this trip. It has been my dream. A few
months ago I read Chad Kobkit's story (he's a Thai contemporary writer) about his
trip with his teacher by private car across America, so I would like to experience, in
reality, the novel I read.
What are your expectations?
I think what will be, will be. It's all my experience to meet and square my shoulders.
Everything, every place, I've not seen before, so I can't expect anything.
Have you ever traveled abroad?
I have never traveled abroad before.
What do you want to see in America?
I am sure that America has places, people, and living standards different from
Thailand, and I will see only the surface. So I want to know what people in the U.S.
think.
What do you expect to learn from this trip?
I would like to learn about humanity and and develop my art work.
