Scope and Content Note

Contains correspondence, loan records, ephemera, clippings, photographs and material regarding the exhibition catalog for the "Exhibition of Marcel Duchamp," the inaugural exhibition celebrating the opening of the Seibu Bijutsukan (Seibu Museum of Art) in Karuizawa, a resort town in the Nagono-ken province, and later shown at the Seibu Museum in Tokyo. Curated by Yoshiaki Tono, one of Japan's foremost art critics and authorities on Duchamp, this exhibition, to which the Philadelphia Museum of Art loaned several works, was the first Duchamp retrospective held in Asia.
