Trips range from one-day excursions to take exclusive tours of special exhibitions and private collections to diverse national and international curator-led tours with rich itineraries.

The Associates Day Trip to Washington, D.C.

Associates travel to Washington, D.C. to visit Joseph J. Rishel, The Gisela and Dennis Alter Senior Curator of European Painting before 1900, in residence as the Samuel H. Kress Professor at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art for the 2010-2011 academic year. Mr. Rishel leads a personalized tour of the National Gallery of Art. In the afternoon we will have a unique behind-the-scenes visit to the Freer Gallery of Art’s Department of Conservation and Scientific Research.

Kathleen A. Foster, The Robert L. McNeil, Jr., Senior Curator of American Art, and Director, Center for American Art, leads a private tour of the new American wing, designed by Foster + Partners, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The centerpiece of the MFA’s historic expansion, this spectacular new wing for the Art of the Americas collection has doubled the number of objects from the collection on view, including several large-scale masterpieces not displayed for decades.

Associates join Yael Rice, Assistant Curator of Indian and Himalayan Art, for a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's newly reinstalled Islamic art collection, home to nearly 1,200 works spanning more than one thousand years. In the afternoon, the group visits the Asia Society to see Princes and Painters in Mughal Delhi 1707 -1857.
The Associates Trip to Houston

Associates travel to Houston— a booming center for art and architecture—and visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Menil Collection, one of the most important privately assembled collections of the 20th century; the great architecture of Rice University; and the artist-inspired exhibition spaces of Dan Flavin, Jenny Holzer, and James Turrel, as well as private collections.

The Pleasures and Treasures of San Francisco and the Napa Valley

The seven-day adventure explores the Bay Area of California and the Napa Valley wine country, rich with art, culture, and history. Locations include the California Academy of Sciences—recently re-opened with a Renzo Piano–designed expansion, the de Young Museum, a fine arts museum located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art—its striking building designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta.

Day Trip to the Storm King Arts Center

Associates travel to the Hudson River Valley where they tour the Storm King Art Center, a sprawling 500-acre sculpture garden with more than 125 outdoor works, including Storm King Wavefield by Maya Lin.
Day Trip to New York: The Frick Collection and the Met
Associates begin the day at the Frick Collection with a curator-led tour of Exuberant Grotesques: Renaissance Maiolica from the Fontana Workshop. The group then moves to The Metropolitan Museum of Art for a curator-led tour of Imperial Privilege: Vienna Porcelain of Du Paquier, 1718–44.
Venice, Padua, and Trieste
September 2009
Associates and Chairman’s Council members are invited to explore a trio of Italian cities! First, the group travels to Venice for the Biennale 2009, the colorful Regatta in the Grand Canal, visits to Palladian Villas, and more. Then it’s off to Padua and Trieste to enjoy museums, villas, and archeological sites, spanning the centuries from the Roman Empire to Italy’s vibrant contemporary art scene.
Day Trip to New York: Sotheby’s and MoMA

The Associates visit the Museum of Modern Art to tour Compass in Hand: Selections from The Judith Rothschild Foundation Contemporary Drawings Collection, the first presentation of the collection, which ranges from the 1930s to the present. This trip also includes a specialist-led tour of Sotheby’s in advance of an auction of Impressionist and Modern art.

Day trip to New York: Folk Art Museum and MoMA

The Associates first explore The Museum of Modern Art, in particular the Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night exhibit and Joan Miró: Painting and Anti-Painting 1927-1937, which reveals underappreciated aspects of an artist long regarded as Surrealism’s greatest and most lyrical paint-poet. The group then attends the American Folk Art Museum to view The Seduction of Light: Ammi Phillips/Mark Rothko Compositions in Pink, Green, and Red and Martin Ramirez: The Last Works.

The Art and Architecture of Minneapolis

Associates travel to Minneapolis, a city of buildings designed by world-renowned architects: the gleaming, Frank Gehry–designed Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota; the Herzog & de Meuron expansion of the Walker Art Center; and the Michael Graves addition to the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts. The trip features special tours highlighting the collections and architecture of superb area museums, plus exclusive access to private collections.

In the afternoon, the group explores galleries at The Metropolitan Museum of Art guided by curators from the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Chairman’s Council members follow in the footsteps of Carl Strehlke, Adjunct Curator of the John G. Johnson Collection, as he researches his 2010 exhibition, 15th Century Art in the Kingdom of Aragon. The tour includes the cities of Valencia, Zaragoza, and Barcelona and the island of Majorca with a focus on the treasures of gothic and Renaissance Spain.
Venice Biennale

Chairman’s Council members are invited to attend the opening of the Biennale 2009 and celebrate as our Museum spotlights the achievements of great American artist Bruce Nauman. The Museum is deeply honored to have been selected to mount the exhibition for the U.S. Pavilion. Museum Curators Carlos Basualdo and Michael Taylor will serve as Biennale Commissioners.
