Travel Opportunities

Associates and Chairman’s Council members enjoy an exciting travel program that invites them to explore the world’s treasures in the company of internationally recognized curators and scholars. Trips range from one-day excursions to take exclusive tours of special exhibitions and private collections to diverse national and international curator-led tours with rich itineraries.

In addition to these tours, special travel opportunities are also available exclusively for Chairman's Council members.

 

2011 - 2013


The Associates Day Trip to Washington, D.C.
March 23, 2011
Associates travel to Washington, D.C. to visit Joseph J. Rishel, The Gisela and Dennis Alter Senior Curator of European Painting before 1900, in residence as the Samuel H. Kress Professor at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art for the 2010-2011 academic year. Mr. Rishel leads a personalized tour of the National Gallery of Art. In the afternoon we will have a unique behind-the-scenes visit to the Freer Gallery of Art’s Department of Conservation and Scientific Research.

The Associates Day Trip to New York City
May 3, 2011
Carl Strehlke, Adjunct Curator of the John G. Johnson Collection, leads a day filled with treasures of European medieval and Renaissance art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. We will also enjoy a guided tour of the Cloisters Museum and Gardens.

The Associates Day Trip to Boston
May 12, 2011
Kathleen A. Foster, The Robert L. McNeil, Jr., Senior Curator of American Art, and Director, Center for American Art, leads a private tour of the new American wing, designed by Foster + Partners, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The centerpiece of the MFA’s historic expansion, this spectacular new wing for the Art of the Americas collection has doubled the number of objects from the collection on view, including several large-scale masterpieces not displayed for decades.

November 30 – December 4, 2011
The annual showcase for modern and cutting-edge contemporary art in the United States, Art Basel Miami Beach takes top honors as one of the international art world’s premier cultural and social highlights. Associates and Chairman’s Council members enjoy VIP access to the fair and its days of exciting exhibitions, social events, and thought-provoking crossover programs that combine music, film, architecture, and design.

Associates Day Trip to New York
May3, 2012
Associates join Yael Rice, Assistant Curator of Indian and Himalayan Art, for a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's newly reinstalled Islamic art collection, home to nearly 1,200 works spanning more than one thousand years. In the afternoon, the group visits the Asia Society to see Princes and Painters in Mughal Delhi 1707 -1857.

The Associates Trip to Houston
March/April 2013
Associates travel to Houston— a booming center for art and architecture—and visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Menil Collection, one of the most important privately assembled collections of the 20th century; the great architecture of Rice University; and the artist-inspired exhibition spaces of Dan Flavin, Jenny Holzer, and James Turrel, as well as private collections.

Chairman’s Council Trip to Southern Spain
November 3 – 11, 2011
Carl Strehlke, Adjunct Curator of the John G. Johnson Collection, leads us through Andalusia, exploring the region’s rich history interwoven with Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions, and including the cities of Sevilla, Cordoba, and Granada.

Chairman's Council Day Trip to New York
March 27, 2012
Chairman's Council members join Pierre Terjanian, The J. J. Medveckis Associate Curator of Arms and Armor, and Carl Strehlke, Adjunct Curator, John G. Johnson Collection, for a private visit to the Neue Galerie's exhibition The Ronald S. Lauder Collection: Selections from the 3rd Century BC to the 20th Century/Germany, Austria, and France. The show includes medieval art, arms and armor, old master paintings, and more. In the afternoon, the group visits the Hispanic Society of America, whose collections address the culture of Spain as well as parts of Portugal and Latin America.

Chairman’s Council Trip to Northern Italy and Austria
September/October 2012
Chairman’s Council members join Pierre Terjanian, The J. J. Medveckis Associate Curator of Arms and Armor and Carl Strehlke, Adjunct Curator of the John G. Johnson Collection, to tour the artistic riches of Northern Europe, from museums in Milan to castles in Austria.
