Christ Bound and Crowned with Thorns

c. 1509
Andrea Solario (Italian (active Venice, Milan, Normandy, and Rome), first dated work 1495, died 1524)
Christ endured a series of trials prior to his crucifixion, including being bound and crowned with thorns. Andrea Solario depicts Christ after these events and includes a reed that appears as a sort of scepter. Such devotional imagery depicting the lone figure of Christ became increasingly popular in Italy during the fifteenth century.
