This wine cooler, one of a pair, follows a French model. A rare survival of the period, it was designed to hold one or two bottles of wine and to sit on a table or sideboard. Such pieces became popular at the end of the seventeenth century. The move away from large wine cisterns that sat on the floor was necessitated by the increase in private, less formal dining....
