An Interior in the Egyptian Manner

c. 1795-1800
Antonio Giuseppe Basoli (Italian, 1774–1843)
A scenographic design painter in Bologna who specialized in exotic references to foreign or vanished civilizations--such as those of ancient Egypt or Etruria--Basoli is primarily remembered for his bold theatrical sets and his fanciful capricci, or drawings of imaginary architectural complexes. This fantasy scene combines a classical rotunda with Ionic columns and Egyptian-style sphinxes.
