Woman's Platform Shoes

c. 1993
Designed by Vivienne Westwood (English, born 1941)
Vivienne Westwood is famous for her subversive-even perverse-reinterpretation of the historical excesses of fashions. The platform shoes she reintroduced in the early 1990s reshaped the foot by incorporating the high sole into the vamp. While these elevated shoes could be worn-most notably by model Naomi Campbell, who fell wearing a pair on the runway-they could also be displayed as art; this pair sometimes adorned the mantelpiece of their former owner.
