Christ, the Virgin, and Saint Anne

Luca Giordano (Italian (active Italy and Spain), 1634–1705)

Giordano left a heavy film of ink over the plate when printing this impression, resulting in a rich gray atmosphere. While this may have been an experiment, it could also have been an attempt to hide foul biting in the upper part of the plate. The white horizontal lines are printer's creases, formed when the paper wrinkled as it passed under the pressure of the printing press.
