Simple, elegant, innovative—Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel’s style is summed up by the suit she created in the 1920s and perfected in the 1950s. In tweed or nubby wool, a softly fitted jacket with pockets, bound edges, and a chain sewn inside to weight the hem pairs with a slim skirt. Comfortable and practical, Chanel’s suit became a staple for sophisticated modern women. The classic design outlived Chanel herself—this archetypal beige and black example was made to order the year after her death— and continues to inspire countless reinterpretations.
