Woman's Suit: Jacket, Skirt, Belt, and Camisole

Fall/Winter 1998
Christian Dior, Paris (founded 1946) Designed by John Galliano (British, born 1960) Worn by Mrs. Martin Field (American, 1941–2013)
This hot-pink suit, created fifty years after Christian Dior’s "New Look" dress, shows fashion’s continuity and constant change. As designer for Dior, John Galliano mixed respect for tradition with imagination and energy. For his 1998 ready-to-wear collection, he infused vibrantly colored "urban daywear" with opulence, as seen in this luxurious collar painstakingly created from wool. Galliano’s flirtatious attitude was even more evident on the runway and in advertisements, where the orange camisole was omitted and the wrap skirt revealed one thigh.
