Dead Christ (Study for Mary Magdalene at the Sepulcher)

1834
Paul Delaroche (French, 1797–1856)

Paul Delaroche’s meticulous historical depictions made him one of the most successful French artists of the mid-1800s. His reputation extended beyond his native Paris to Saint Petersburg, London, and New York City.

In 1833, he was commissioned by the French government to paint seven monumental frescoes for the church of the Madeleine (Paris). Dismayed by political interference, Delaroche refused to continue working on the project shortly after executing this magnificent preparatory drawing.
