The Port at Saint Tropez

c. 1897-1898
Paul Signac (French, 1863–1935) Published by Ambroise Vollard (French, 1870–1930) Printed by Auguste Clot (French, 1858–1936)
As one of the most accomplished professional printmakers in Paris, Auguste Clot played an important role during the boom in color printmaking in the 1890s. Since it was Clot's responsibility to divide the colors of a print design for transfer onto different stones and to coordinate their alignment, painters like Signac, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Paul Cézanne often had little to do with the actual production of a color print beyond furnishing the original drawing and making corrections to a finished proof.
