Marine

1864-1865
Édouard Manet (French, 1832–1883)

During the 1860s Édouard Manet produced several works inspired by an American Civil War naval battle that occurred off the coast of France in 1864. This print positions the ships as they are seen in the artist’s more dramatic painting The Battle of the USS "Kearsarge" and the CSS "Alabama" (PMA cat. 1027). Manet’s depictions of the skirmish point to the role the sea has played in human conflict and to the powerful forces of nature that are beyond human control.
