The Marketplace at Gisors (Rue Cappeville)

1894-1895
Camille Pissarro (French, 1830–1903)
A painter who delighted in rainy days, Pissarro aimed for a soft gray look in many of his prints. He invented a tool for the purpose, a cone of rolled emery paper, with which he would roughen parts of his designs. The roughened patches would then print a muted tonalities.
