Object Details
Purchased from the artist through Marcel Duchamp as agent, by Louise and Walter C. Arensberg, Los Angeles, by 1937 [1]; gift to PMA, 1950.1. The painting was published in Cahiers d'Art, Max Ernst: Oeuvres de 1919 à 1936, Paris, 1937, p. [96] as "Coll. Arensberg." In a letter to the Arensbergs of September 8, 1951, Marcel Duchamp stated that he purchased the painting from the artist in 1938 (see PMA Arensberg Archives, CA Use Tax provenance notes); however, in recollecting events long after the fact, he must have been off by one year.
