Heraldic Panel with the Coat of Arms of Sir Roger Fiennes (1384 - 1449) and His Wife, Elizabeth Holland of Northamptonshire

c. 1441-1450
Artist/maker unknown, English
This shield was made for a window in the private chapel of Herstmonceux, a magnificent medieval castle built for Sir Roger Fiennes, a successful veteran of the Hundred Years’ War (1337–1453) and treasurer to King Henry VI of England. The castle made an impressive statement of Fiennes’s wealth and connections, with decoration that included heraldic motifs related to Sir Roger’s arms. In this panel Sir Roger Fiennes’s shield, featuring three golden lions, is impaled (in heraldry, placing two coats of arms side by side) with the arms of his wife.
