Cup

12th century
Artist/maker unknown, Korean
The glaze on this delicate cup is the epitome of the kingfisher-blue hue of Goryeo dynasty celadon glazes, which were perfected by the eleventh century. The Chinese envoy Xu Jing (1091–1153), who was dispatched by the Song court to visit Korea in 1123, praised the celadon wares as “first under heaven” and possessing “the radiance of jade and the crystal clarity of water.”
