During the Goryeo dynasty, Buddhism gained prominence under royal patronage and Buddhist celebrations called for the development of ritual implements. Bowls such as the ones on display here were placed on side altars devoted to deceased monks.

Before the fifteenth century, the upper class of Korea traditionally used metal bowls in winter and earthenware bowls in summer.
