The Crucifixion

1470s
Attributed to Simon Marmion (Netherlandish (active Amiens, Lille, Tournai, and Valenciennes), first documented 1449, died 1489)
This Crucifixion scene is an example of the influence of Rogier van der Weyden (1399/1400–1464). Marmion learned from Rogier to express the heightened dramatic moment through simplified, clearly defined spatial relationships within a relatively shallow pictorial space.
