cell [x] florence [x] florentine [x] freedom [x] late medieval [x] predella [x] tempera [x]On the left an angel appears to Peter in prison, and on the right the same angel leads him out past sleeping guards. This small painting comes from a series of panels depicting the apostle's life. The panels formed the predella, or base, of the high altarpiece in the now-destroyed Florentine church of San Pier Maggiore, which was dedicated to Peter.
