The Meeting of Pope Pius VI and Doge Paolo Renier at San Giorgio in Alga

1782
Francesco Guardi (Italian (active Venice), 1712–1793)
When Pope Pius VI visited Venice in 1782, the Venetian republic commissioned Francesco Guardi to paint a series of scenes depicting the papal ceremonies. The artist later made smaller-scale replicas, including this work that shows the ruler, or doge, of Venice and a throng of colorful boaters greeting the pope on his arrival.
