The Call to Arms
Signed by male figure's left foot: A. Rodin Foundry mark rear center: ALEXIS RUDIER/Fondeur. PARIS.
Auguste Rodin, French, 1840 - 1917. Cast by the founder Alexis Rudier, Paris, 1874 - 1952.
This figure group was Rodin’s losing submission in an 1879 competition for a monument commemorating the courage of Parisians in defending their city during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. It shows the Genius of Liberty, who with arms outstretched hurls her defiance against the enemy. Leaning against her is the nude body of a dying warrior, a broken sword still clutched in his left hand.
