Red Cross Nurse Caring for Soldier
Artist/maker unknown, French. Published by Revanche, France.
Soldiers wounded on the battlefields in France and Belgium during World War I were supplied with postcards to send to relatives, loved ones, and friends during their period of convalescence. The posed photographs generally show a heroic nurse attending to a recovering soldier. These five cards were sent on separate days in 1917 by a British soldier to a woman friend back home.
This postcard reads:
Il faut surmonter la souffrance
En songeant que: C'est pour la France
(You must overcome suffering
By thinking: It's for France)
