Landscape with Figure

1866-1867
William Trost Richards (American, 1833–1905)
Trained in his native Philadelphia, William Trost Richards pursued absolute fidelity to nature in his art. In this remarkable landscape drawing, he uses a variety of techniques to meticulously depict the textures of tree bark and foliage, dappled light and soft shadows. The solitary figure-a rare human presence in his forest interiors-provides a measure of the immensity of the woods and enhances the location's poetic silence and tranquility.
