Water Container (Mizusashi) with Lid

2002
Container made by Uozumi Yasuhiko (Japanese, born 1937) Lid carved by Kawakita Ryōzō (Japanese, born 1934) Lacquer decoration on lid by Shioda Keishirō (Japanese, 1926–2006)
Uozumi Yasuhiko has been designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government. The technique used for making sahari, the alloy of which this work is made, is a traditional one that originated with the production of Japanese bells and sword furniture/fittings. For such pieces, the metal must be well tempered to withstand hard physical use over a long period of time. The same is true of water containers, which hold the boiling water used in preparing green powdered tea for the Japanese tea ceremony.
