Like many modern Russian artists, including Nicholas Roerich and Kasimir Malevich, Goncharova was inspired by Russian religious art of the Middle Ages. This design for the unrealized ballet La Liturgie (Liturgy), based on scenes from the life of Christ, was derived from the style of medieval icons of the Russian Orthodox Church.
