Pair of Mallards on a Stream, with Flowering Reeds

c. 1832-1835
Utagawa Hiroshige I (Japanese, 1797–1858) Published by Kawaguchiya Shōzō
The ducks depicted on this print are seen from above and from the side simultaneously in an arrangement that invites close inspection. The reeds are cropped by the edge of the paper and cross over the ducks’ bodies in a way that suggests the spontaneity of a scene freely observed in nature.
