Homer’s painting of a lookout calling the hours with a reassuring “All’s well!” gives a vision of calm and human competence at sea. The etching is one of several artistic prints made after Homer’s work by other artists, with his consent. In the painting (which is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), Homer enjoyed depicting the blue tonality of moonlight and the rocking motion of shipboard life.
