David with the Head of Goliath

c. 1640s
Giulio Carpioni I (Italian, c. 1613–1679)
Carpioni himself may have been responsible for the brown hatching on David's arm: printmakers sometimes drew on an impression to test an idea before returning to the plate and making irreversible changes. There is no later state of this print, however, so if the hatching is Carpioni's work, he must have decided against the changes.
