Ike Taiga (Japanese, 1723–1776)

Ike Taiga was one of the representative painters and calligraphers of the Edo period. When the Joseon missions came to Japan in 1764, Taiga and other Japanese scholars and literati artists attended meetings with the ambassador and the envoys in Kyoto. It is believed that Taiga sent a letter inquiring about painting methods to Korean court painter Kim Yusong, who was one of the envoys. Bamboo was admired in East Asian countries for its symbolism and aesthetic beauty.
