Amitayus, the Buddha of Limitless Life

A recent gift to the Museum, this painting was bequeathed by Natacha Rambova to her niece, Teresa Kimball Peterson Burrell (1924–2010). It depicts Amitayus, identifiable by his red color and the vase in his folded hands, flanked by eight smaller manifestations of himself. Amitabha, the Buddha of Limitless Light (of whom Amitayus is an emanation), sits above the central figure. In the lower corners are two of the kings of the cardinal directions as well as six of the eighty-four mahasiddhas (great adepts), indicating that this was once part of a significantly larger set of paintings.
