This relief adorned the facade of the chapel at the château of Pagny. As part of the elaborate decoration over the central lefthand door, it was placed below the canopy with the Virgin and Child (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1930-1-85). Above the central righthand door sat a related relief (now at the Louvre in Paris) with the coat of arms of Eleanore, Queen of France.
Philippe Chabot, the owner of Pagny, was the king's governor in the province of Burgundy. He was also a childhood friend of Francis I and his wife was the king's illegitimate half-sister.
