The Dancers (Sailor and Sweetheart)
Chana Orloff, French (born Ukraine), 1888 - 1968. Cast by Alexis Rudier, Paris, 1874 - 1952.
A sailor and his dance partner lean into an amorous dip in sculptor Chana Orloff’s playful riff on Rodin’s The Kiss. The frank depiction of sexuality in Rodin’s nudes had scandalized Victorian-era viewers.
The Dancers is equally provocative: Orloff uses the heavy angular style of modern architecture to depict a scene of everyday sexuality, rarely a subject of monumental treatment or veneration.
Orloff did not create this sculpture as an outdoor monument. But the innovative composition anticipates her future success at winning major commissions after World War II.
