Provenance

Unidentified private collector, Barcelona, purchased from the artist; with an unidentified Paris dealer; sold to A. E. Gallatin (1881-1952), New York, by 1929 (probably March) [1]; gift to PMA, 1944. 1. According to a letter of March 22, 1929 to Henry McBride (quoted in Stavitsky, The Development, Institutionalization, and Impact of the A. E. Gallatin Collection of Modern Art [Ph. D. dissertation, New York University], 1990, vol. 9, p. 289), Gallatin bought the painting from an "obscure" dealer, shortly after a collector from Barcelona, who had bought it from the artist, sold it to the dealer. Gallatin announced the acquisition (as "Banks of the Oise") in a Gallery of Living Art press release of October 17, 1929.
