Vase with Scenes from Amadis de Gaula

c. 1560-1570
Workshop of Guido Durantino (Italian (active Urbino), documented 1516–1576) or Workshop of Orazio Fontana (Italian (active Urbino), c. 1510–1571)
This vase belongs to a service showing illustrations from a Spanish novel popular throughout Europe in the mid-sixteenth century. The service was destined for Spain, probably as a diplomatic gift. One of the stories depicted takes place by moonlight—a rare night scene found on maiolica.
