Emily Caroline Catherine Frances (1810-1872), first daughter of the 5th Lord Cowper, married on June 10, 1830, Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury (1801-1885), the great evangelical philanthropist, who is commemorated by the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus. Lawrence painted Lady Emily at the age of about three. Just before her marriage, Thomas Creevy described her, on March 3, 1829, as "the leading favorite of the town so far. She is very inferior to her fame for looks, but is very natural, lively, and appears a good natured young person.''1
