Dr. Josiah Stewart (1783-1867)

c. 1812
Jacob Eichholtz (American, 1776–1842)
This portrait of Dr. Josiah Stewart (1783-1867) is a handsome and meticulously executed example of Jacob Eichholtz's early Philadelphia portraiture. The likeness is direct and pleasant but also projects a sense of authority. Stewart matriculated at the University of Pennsylvania in 1809, graduated with an M.D. on March 29, 1812 and established a medical practice in Philadelphia. The apparent age of the sitter and the style of the portrait suggest it was painted not long after Stewart's graduation.
