Provenance

Paul Guillaume, Paris; sold to Louis Libaude (dealer) (d. 1922), Paris; on deposit with Galerie Barbazanges Hodebert, Paris [1]. René Huot. Jean Guérin [2]. With Galerie Étienne Bignou, Paris (photo no. 2775), after 1926 and by 1938 [3]; with Alex Reid & Lefèvre, London, by 1938; sold to Samuel S. White, 3rd (1876-1952), Ardmore, PA, June 16, 1938 [4]; bequest of Vera White (Mrs. Samuel S. White, 3rd) to PMA, 1967. 1. The preceding provenance information per Jean Fabris and Cédric Paillier, L'Oeuvre complet de Maurice Utrillo (Paris, 2009), no. 37, p. 560. Libaude signed an exclusive contract with Utrillo in 1910. 2. The former owners Libaude, Huot, and Guérin are listed in a letter in the curatorial file from Reid & Lefèvre to S. S. White dated 10 August 1938. 3. Bignou opened his Paris gallery in 1927. 4. A March 2002 letter from Lorna Carberry of Reid & Lefèvre (in curatorial file) states that her firm purchased the painting from Bignou, Paris, but the date of purchase was not recorded. Étienne Bignou was closely associated with Reid & Lefèvre, of which he was a former director, and served as a major source for their French paintings. The Bignou annotated photo album at the Frick Art Reference Library does not record any former collections for this work.
