Rodin Museum

Scene from the French Revolution

Modeled c. 1879
Auguste Rodin (French, 1840–1917)
This small study for a sculpture suggests that Rodin planned to enter a competition for a monument to the French Republic held in Paris in 1879. The relief depicts the enrollment of volunteers in the Army of the French Revolution of 1792. The sculptor does not seem to have taken his ideas any further than this sketch created in the pliable medium of wax.
