Breastplate for Use on Foot in the Field

1508
Artist/maker unknown, German
This infantry breastplate belongs to a set of four thousand ordered in 1508 from the city of Nuremberg by Maximilian I (ruled as Holy Roman Emperor 1493 to 1519). It is one of only two known examples that are stamped with the control marks from both Nuremberg and Augsburg, which indicate that the Nuremberg breastplates shipped to Maximilian were inspected at Augsburg to ensure their quality.
