Yogi of the Mountains

c. 1600-1610
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
Three Hindu holy men inhabit this mountain landscape but their accoutrements suggest their different circumstances. One, dressed in a cloak and a turban, roams the landscape with a begging bowl in his hand and a dog by his side. He lives in an earthly environment, as suggested by the man-made fountain and water tanks. In contrast, a second holy man and his disciple sit in a shrine delicately balanced atop the rugged mountain landscape. Their remote setting, sparse clothing, and rosaries intimate their renouncement of earthly possessions and further distance them from the world below.
