Falling to their knees in deference and awe as they catch their first glimpse of the majestic dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica, Eastlake’s pilgrims illustrate the church’s powerful impact on the faithful. Eastlake’s view is nominally documentary, a portrait of peasant pilgrims traveling to Rome during the 1825 Jubilee.
