Plate with the Queen of Sheba before King Solomon

Late 16th century
Artist/maker unknown, French
This piece was probably once a tall, footed plate. The basin of the plate contains a composition derived from one of Bernard Salomon's biblical illustrations. On the underside are fantastic aquatic creatures, a favorite Renaissance motif. The piece has been restored in modern times as a lid, with a knob in the center of the stem replacing the slender foot of the original design.
