Dish with Aeneas and Anchises (from Book VI of The Aeneid) and the Coat of Arms of Cardinal Anton Maria Salviati

c. 1580s
Workshop of the Patanazzi family (Italian (active Urbino), active late 16th–early 17th century)
The exaggerated figures on this plate reveal the decline of istoriato - or narrative scene - painting on maiolica at the end of the sixteenth century. Details of the composition reflect an accurate reading of Virgil's Aeneid, perhaps an indication that the artist was given a model to follow. The patron, Cardinal Salviati, was a highly educated cleric from an important Florentine family.
