Book of Hours for Rome Use
France, Provence, probably Carpentras, c. 1450

Monks Chanting the Office of the Dead. A group of monks cluster around a funeral bier, chanting the Office of the Dead from an open choir book. The borders of this provincial Book of Hours are very unusual and consist of small, prickly, gold leaves.
