Prayer Book
France, Saint Amand, 1538

The Virgin and Child Standing on a Crescent Moon. In this manuscript, prayers to the Virgin Mary are introduced with a miniature of the Virgin and Child. The Virgin stands on a crescent moon, an image described in the Book of Apocalypse (Revelation). Prayers said while looking at such an image were thought to be especially beneficial.
