Historiated Initial I with Saints Peter and Paul. This choir book is large (22 7/8" x 16 5/8") so that many people could read from it at once. The volume is from a set of three made for the monastery of Sant' Ambrogio Maggiore in Milan, Italy. Marginal notes and vellum patches used to repair tears attest to the book's long use. The initial depicts Saints Peter and Paul and marks the Mass for their feast day, celebrated on June 29.
