Gallican Psalter with Canticles, Litany, and Two Prayers (Lewis Psalter)
France, Paris, c. 122530

Journey of the Magi. This luxurious Psalter begins with an extensive cycle of miniatures. The scenes are arranged in roundels with gold frames and checkered pink and blue backgrounds. This opening describes the Journey of the Magi (Kings) at Christ's birth. The two scenes depict the Magi traveling toward the star and standing before King Herod, who is inspired by an evil spirit.
